As our ocean continues to be harmed with plastic pollution, I am happy to see Protect Our Future and Plastic Free Cayman working together to help combat this problem. With the monthly beach clean ups these organizations arrange, we are successfully educating and spending awareness to communities about this global issue our world faces in the hopes of making our oceans cleaner.

The greatest success of Plastic Free Cayman has undoubtedly been the mobilisation of the Caymanian people in tackling our ocean’s plastic problems. Over time, people of the Cayman Islands have found a recourse to demand action from our elected representatives, to ensure that the continued health and prosperity of our oceans’ ecosystems remains the focus of our economic development, and to ensure that our past does not become lost under heaps of plastic waste. Our efforts in educating people of all ages to the threat of plastic waste in our ocean’s health has allowed us to witness the power, and collective compassion, of our Caymanian community to demand a better, and more sustainable, future.

To put it simply, Plastic Free Cayman changed my life. Before I got involved, I seemingly lived in a bubble. Now being able to understand the impact each individual person can have on their surrounding environment is astounding. There are such simple solutions that not only evoke deep personal growth, but also greatly impact the world and community that surround you. Plastic Free Cayman taught me the strength that each and every voice have, and the power that I as an individual have to make a difference. Everyone has the power, especially when you have a team like Plastic Free Cayman standing with you. It is up to each and every one of us to decide what the future looks like, and as terrifying as that is, I firmly believe that it begins with how we treat the world around us.

I am reminded every day the power of collectivism when I scroll through social media and see pictures of Plastic Free Cayman and Protect Our Future members’ involvement in combating plastic pollution. The consistent work of these students illustrates how sustainability needs to be daily practice rather than a one time occurrence. Listen to these youth leaders, because believe me, they are leading our tomorrow.

Our current plastic issue displays how interconnected we are as a region and as a planet. Even though much of the trash isn’t produced by locals, it still arrives on our shores which gives us the responsibility to clean it before it goes anywhere else. Our organisations continue to show people the importance of our actions regarding both the positive and the detrimental affects we can have on environment.

The plastic pollution in the Caribbean is only an increasing problem. It has become evident that the plastic each island produces is not just their issue, but becomes a burden on other Caribbean nations. Through hurricanes, high winds, and currents this garbage travels through the oceans killing hundreds of animals, and ends up in another nations marine environment. Plastic pollution is an issue that cannot be stopped by a group of environmentalists, but requires the help from communities members, including government.
